Downtown is the county's one skyline, and its buildings are photographed against each other and the bay. Most of the work here is office towers and life science on the waterfront, mixed-use in the neighbourhoods around them, and the flex and industrial of Kearny Mesa and Mission Valley a few minutes inland.
What we have shot here
1 and 2 Columbia Place, two office towers across day, golden hour and blue hour (two visits). RaDD, IQHQ's research and development district on the waterfront, from over the water (off the water). The Embarcadero and the Maritime Museum's ships, for an architectural visualisation studio. 4019 to 4023 Goldfinch Street in Mission Hills. Amp&rsand in Mission Valley, a leasing film. 9323 Balboa Avenue in Kearny Mesa, 1151 Mildred Street in Morena and 4435 Mission Bay Drive.
What is different here
Airspace and glass. Downtown and the bay sit inside San Diego International's airspace, where the allowed height near the runway can be very low, so every flight is authorised at booking and many of the best aerials are shot from over the water. Downtown is also where a drone is most visible, to the airport, the port and the people below. The towers are mirrored glass, so the frame is in the last hour and at blue hour; the planner shows which face gets the sun and when.

Can you fly a drone downtown?
Yes, with authorisation. Downtown and the bay sit inside San Diego International's airspace, where the allowed height near the runway can be very low, so the flight is filed at booking. Many downtown aerials are shot from over the water for that reason. The planner shows the ceiling for the address.
When should a glass tower be shot?
Usually in the last hour of light and at blue hour, when the glass holds the sky and the lobby lights are on. The planner shows which face gets the sun and when.
Do you shoot mixed-use and residential buildings?
Yes: the building in its block from the air, the retail at street level, and the lobby, amenity spaces and a finished unit inside.
